Once again Ambra stood before the Orb node and sealed it shut. It was something I had to assume was happening. I could not see the strings. I was no Reader. Her efforts left no visible change in the Time Sphere that I could perceive. But as with so much I was being introduced to in the universe during this mission, I would have to get used to being in the dark.

Then we left Gyl through the Orb, and I again was racked with pains and lost consciousness. Once again, to my continued embarrassment, I was the only one affected. The faded outlines of a disturbing dream ate at my subconscious, but I pushed it to the side. I didn’t feel like getting up, but I did. I mustered all my strength, denied the presence of the nausea and headache, and announced myself fully ready to continue the mission. Ambra looked skeptically at me but said nothing. I was just happy that I was able to maintain my composure and avoid passing out for the first few hours.

Another large gas giant waited in front of us. The knowledge learned in sharing with Ambra poured through my mind. Several hundred years ago, when astronomers on Old Earth began the first cataloguing of extrasolar planets, those interested in extraterrestrial life were disappointed to find that most star systems did not possess small, rocky, water-covered Earth-like planets. Instead, the predominant form of star system involved one or more large gas giants. Some at the time spun this to believe that moons around the gas giant could perhaps be habitable enough to support life as they imagined it. This indeed is the case in hundreds of systems. Much more common, however, is that the gas giants themselves would harbor life very much not like what the earlier scientists were imagining.

The radiant orange Hola was a member of this common set of worlds. The planet was about twice the size of our Jupiter, much smaller than the enormity that was Gyl. Yet for a creature of New Earth, it still seemed gigantic. Twenty moons circled the world, none of them with life. Life aplenty filled the upper atmosphere of the gas giant.

As we approached, Ambra announced that she had detected the death drones. As on Gyl, they were positioned across the surface of the planet doing their dirty work. So Waythrel’s experiment was on. We would examine the creatures of Hola for any evidence of “entropic acceleration.” Then, we would destroy the drones and seal the final node.

We descended through the atmosphere in the bubble enclosure, choosing a location equidistant from the drones. The gas layers were highly structured. The cloud formations were beautiful, colorful, titanic, and multilayered. They seemed almost like mountains or towers built out of the vapors of the planet.
